Use the Five S framework to scaffold students' prompt writing with generative AI in chemistry education¶

Description¶
The Five S framework is a prompt-engineering scaffold for educators and students using generative AI, comprising five strategies: "set the scene", "be specific", "simplify language", "structure output", and "share feedback". In the reviewed study A1, chemistry teacher candidates performed exercises using ChatGPT and were informed about the Five S framework, then evaluated their prompts and answers. The review presents it as a solution to the risk of copying unverified AI-generated answers.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Students need opportunities to evaluate their prompts and the AI's answers, as in study A1 where students evaluated their prompts and answers after using ChatGPT.
Constraints¶
- The review reports it as a response to accuracy and reliability risks in chemistry education contexts; the article does not print evidence of its effectiveness beyond the study's survey-based evaluation.
Target Learners¶
- pre-service chemistry teacher candidates
- middle and high school chemistry students
Target Learning Goals¶
- prompt writing skills
- reflective and critical use of generative AI
- chemistry problem solving
