Design classroom-embedded experiments as small, focused, theory-driven manipulations¶
Strategy · All strategies

Description¶
The report recommends that classroom-embedded experiments test "small, focused manipulations, particularly when they can isolate specific mechanisms or constructs from learning sciences" so there is a clear pathway from intervention to outcome. Testing multiple interventions at once can produce confusing results and unclear attribution. Grounding manipulations in learning science theories such as cognitive load, worked examples, metacognition, or spaced practice lets findings serve both research and platform development, enabling replication and iterative hypothesis testing.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Interventions should isolate individual constructs; each experiment conducted separately to provide clear, interpretable results.
Constraints¶
- A combined multi-component intervention may appear effective without revealing which component drove the impact, as happened in a MATHia study testing visual design plus readability improvements.
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students in digital learning platforms
Target Learning Goals¶
- Generating interpretable, cumulative evidence about which platform changes matter most to learning
Related Strategies¶
- Prioritize process-data instrumentation, open collaboration, and dissemination in learning platforms
