Description¶
The review argues that because students' learning patterns are related to environmental factors such as teaching strategies and perceptions of the learning environment, these relations "may give indications for attempts to foster the quality of student learning". Specifically, learning-focused teaching that gives students control over their own learning decisions was associated with higher use of all processing strategies and more regulation, while external teacher and peer regulation can help learners perceive benefit in student-autonomous settings.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Attention to specific pedagogical arrangements, since environmental influences may operate at a quite specific level
Constraints¶
- Most supporting studies were correlational, so the direction of influence can go in several ways and relationships are probably reciprocal
Target Learners¶
- students in higher education
Target Learning Goals¶
- fostering high-quality learning patterns such as deep processing and self-regulation
Affordances¶
- Learning Patterns Framework Vermunt
Claims¶
- Learning patterns relate to contextual factors including teaching strategies, perceptions of the learning environment, and discipline [+M]
- Cross-country meta-analysis: meaning-directed, reproduction-directed and undirected patterns are universal, while application-directed, passive-idealistic and passive-motivational patterns are context-specific [+M]
- Learning patterns are associated with personal factors (personality, motivation, beliefs, prior education, age, gender); their associations with personality are weak to moderate, indicating learning patterns are not stable traits [+M]
- Meaning-directed learning is positively related to academic performance while undirected learning is consistently negatively related [+W]
