Four-stage post-training support pathway for sustaining training transfer¶

Description¶
A post-training support pathway (Figure 2) derived directly from participants' descriptions of facilitators and barriers, specifying responsible stakeholders, implementation timelines, and required resources across four stages: pre-return preparation, early post-return reinforcement, competency consolidation, and continuous role expansion. The article states that at each stage "individual readiness, educational reinforcement, and organizational support are parallel prerequisites rather than sequential steps." It is offered as a practical template for maximizing the return on investment in specialty nurse education.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Role authorization and protected practice time must be in place, since without them even highly motivated nurses may find it difficult to apply advanced competencies
- Simulation refresher training and mentor feedback are needed to prevent early training gains from diminishing within several months
Constraints¶
- The pathway is a practical translation of qualitative findings, not an independently tested intervention model
Target Learners¶
- neurosurgical specialty nurses returning to clinical posts after training
Target Learning Goals¶
- sustained application and maintenance of specialty training outcomes in clinical practice
