Description¶
The article proposes scenarios and personas as design methods for centering equity in research planning on digital learning platforms. Scenarios envision an equitable and inclusive future to guide longer-term plans, while personas are "profiles that are grounded in the lived experiences of the end-users" describing researchers' race, gender, motivations, challenges, and decision-making. The SEERNet team created one detailed scenario and three example personas of scholars who do not yet use DLPs, and asked DLP partners to develop additional personas and scenarios to frame conversations over the next four years of the project.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Personas must be developed carefully and with empathy, grounded in the lived experiences of real educators and researchers, to avoid narrow typing of groups of people
Constraints¶
- The personas and starting scenarios are examples of researchers and their research questions who could potentially use a DLP and not exhaustive of the possibilities
Target Learners¶
- education researchers using or considering digital learning platforms
- K-12 and higher education research communities
Target Learning Goals¶
- centering equity in education research design
- envisioning future capabilities of digital learning platforms
