Gradual-release coaching model (I do, we do, you do) for building turnaround capacity¶

Description¶
TenSquare's coaching follows a gradual release model in which the partner first models and conducts improvement activities itself, then plans alongside school staff, and finally shifts to consultation only as needed. The report describes "an 'I do, we do, you do' approach": in year 1 TenSquare employees conducted and facilitated meetings themselves, and by years 3 and 4 Perry Street staff conducted the functions independently. The model spans instructional coaching for teachers and leadership coaching for building systems.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Staff must be open to feedback and coaching; the report says being coachable was TenSquare's priority in hiring
- Multi-year engagement long enough for the release phases to occur
Constraints¶
- The report warns that without building new capacities, systemic transformation will not be sustained once the partner departs
Target Learners¶
- Teachers, instructional coaches, school leaders, and boards in turnaround schools
Target Learning Goals¶
- Building durable staff and leadership capacity to sustain improved practices
