Guide adult students through self-regulated learning skills within the course of study using educational technology¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article's practitioner notes recommend that educators "should not assume that all adult students are self-regulated learners with effective study skills" and that guiding adult students through learning and applying self-regulated learning skills within the course of study can help their learning, especially online. Educational technology can enable this learning and application, and the practice of self-regulated learning skills within the technological system should be personalised and adaptive. The strategy was implemented through the ePSRL Management System embedded as a mandatory course requirement.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The self-regulated learning practice must be embedded within the course of study rather than delivered only before it begins
- The technological system used should be personalised and adaptive
Constraints¶
- The study's evidence comes from healthcare-domain learners in Singapore, and the two student groups were not matched for age, gender and ability
Target Learners¶
- Adult postgraduate students in online continuing professional education
Target Learning Goals¶
- Self-regulated learning skills including goal setting, time management, reflection and learning strategies
Related Strategies¶
- Provide explicit teaching of SRL methods as structured guidance for regulating learning in online and blended settings
- Accommodate Varying Technology Experience
- Regulate regulative tool use: guide students to the supports that match their task activity
