Design conscientiousness interventions around habit building with explicit contextual cues, and complement them with motivational boosters to maintain intention-habit alignment¶

Description¶
Building on the finding that all reviewed interventions included habit building, the review recommends that future interventions (i) highlight the importance of contextual cues for developing and enacting habitual behaviors and prompt people to actively search for appropriate contextual cues to associate with the target behavior, and (ii) complement interventions with "motivational boosters" ensuring participants remain motivated to engage long term in conscientious behaviors, maintaining alignment between original intention and the established habit.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Interventions must include habit-building activities in which repeated practice of target behaviors is paired with contextual cues so the cue generates the action impulse
Constraints¶
- The review notes habit formation may be neither necessary nor sufficient to sustain long-term behavior change, because habit-generated impulses compete with other impulses
Target Learners¶
- general adults
- students
Target Learning Goals¶
- forming and maintaining conscientiousness-supporting habits and behaviors
Affordances¶
- Personality Change Hierarchy And Frameworks Conscientiousness
Claims¶
- Behavior activation interventions show a dose-response pattern — completing more conscientiousness challenges produced larger increases — but one behavior activation trial found no significant change [+W]
- Digital coaching significantly increased trait conscientiousness, with effects stable one year after the intervention ended [+W]
- Digital coaching increased the organization and productiveness facets of conscientiousness but not responsibility, with no observer-reported facet changes [+W]
- Most recent interventions to strengthen conscientiousness significantly increased it at the trait, facet, or state level, with small-to-moderate effect sizes [+W]
