Description¶
K-12 engineering teachers use scaffolding questions to help students learn the Engineering Design Process through design challenges. Hard scaffolding involves anticipating and addressing students' needs ahead of time, complementing soft scaffolding in which teachers dynamically offer support as they monitor students. Prepared questions can be printed and shared with students working on design projects.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers must anticipate potential difficulties students may face and tailor the curriculum to students' needs
Constraints¶
- Creating such scaffolds is time intensive and adds to teachers' already intensive workload
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students working on engineering design challenges
Target Learning Goals¶
- Learning the Engineering Design Process, including breaking down problems, iterating, evaluating, and redesigning
