Use hybrid architectures in which KG-grounded classifiers handle diagnosis while LLMs provide open-ended scaffolding and dialogue¶

Description¶
Based on the finding that LLM diagnostic failures persist regardless of solution context and that accurate classification does not guarantee actionable feedback, the article recommends a hybrid division of labor. It states that "a more effective hybrid architecture may use LLMs for open-ended dialogue and hint generation while KG-grounded classifiers provide diagnostic labeling, with feedback conditioned on classifier outputs instead of self-assessed reasoning validity." In this design the LLM contributes conversational flexibility while the knowledge graph supplies the three-way diagnostic signal the LLMs could not produce reliably on their own.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A KG-grounded diagnostic classifier whose outputs condition the LLM's feedback, replacing LLM self-assessed reasoning validity
Constraints¶
- The article diagnoses the classification failures without proposing or evaluating a mitigation mechanism; implementing and evaluating such hybrid systems is left to future work
Target Learners¶
- students in structured reasoning domains such as propositional logic proofs
Target Learning Goals¶
- adaptive step-level feedback that distinguishes optimal, valid-alternative, and incorrect reasoning
