Build infrastructure-level mechanisms to monitor, benchmark, and control LLM response behavior across model transitions in conversation-based assessment¶

Description¶
The article recommends treating response consistency in conversation-based assessment as an infrastructure challenge rather than a prompt-engineering challenge. Because prompting and conversational context alone were insufficient to preserve consistent reply behavior when the underlying LLM changes, systems should add mechanisms that "monitor, benchmark, and control response behavior across model transitions." Depending on the consistency level required, "these mechanisms may include symbolic rules, response templates, validation layers, or other architectural components that help preserve assessment-relevant functions despite changes in the underlying LLMs." This is most important in high-stakes settings where variability threatens comparability.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Systems that rely on LLM-generated responses require additional mechanisms beyond prompts and conversation history to preserve assessment-relevant functions across model updates, releases, and retirements.
Constraints¶
- Particularly important in high-stakes assessment settings, where response variability may affect comparability of assessment conditions and validity, reliability, fairness, and interpretability of score-based decisions.
Target Learners¶
- Adults completing collaborative problem-solving science tasks, as in the study's Amazon Mechanical Turk dyads
Target Learning Goals¶
- Communication and collaboration skills measured through conversation-based assessment
Related Strategies¶
- Apply error mitigation such as self-consistency before deploying LLM-generated help, and frame unmitigated LLM feedback as an imperfect source
- Human-in-the-loop evaluation of LLM assessment conversations for fairness, bias, and explainability
