Instructional Commons: record and disseminate top teachers' full-year instruction for peer-to-peer professional use¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The brief proposes identifying the best teacher for a given subject and grade, paying them to have "their entire year of teaching for that subject recorded," then digitizing the videos and supporting materials — lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes — for other teachers to use. It builds on earlier lesson-plan repositories and offers "a peer-to-peer training model, the opportunity for teachers to observe high quality instruction in depth," plus a common standard for professional development at relatively modest cost.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Reliable estimates of teacher performance, drawing on student-level standardized test data over multiple cohorts plus assessments from principals, peers and other experts
Constraints¶
- Where supply of high-need students outstrips the supply of high-impact teachers, this second option is positioned as an alternative to incentive-based class expansion
Target Learners¶
- K-12 teachers seeking to improve instructional quality, and their students
Target Learning Goals¶
- Raising the pace of learning by improving quality of instruction
