Instructor acts as a broker between classroom and professional communities, deliberately legitimizing inter-group consultation¶

Description¶
The article describes the teacher taking on "the role of a broker, acting as a go-between the two communities and guiding the classroom community closer to that of the practicing physics community". In AdLab this was enacted when the instructor, unaware which atomizer worked best, invited a member of the previous group to share his expertise, thereby "negotiating the norm that it is okay to consult with other groups". This deliberate instructional choice supports the development and sharing of knowledge and resources between lab groups.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Structural conditions that create localized expertise, such as groups doing the same experiments at different times
Constraints¶
- The strategy depends on the instructor recognizing the structural constraints of the lab environment
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate physics students in advanced laboratory courses
Target Learning Goals¶
- inter-group knowledge sharing
- enculturation into professional norms of consultation and collaboration
