Integrate GenAI around a defined educational problem with explicit guardrails, not around the novelty of the tool¶

Description¶
The review's design principle for curriculum leaders is to "integrate GenAI around a defined educational problem, not around the novelty of the tool": begin with the target competence, specify what the learner must do cognitively, choose where GenAI adds value, and retain a credible non-AI route. Implementation proceeds as a guardrailed sequence from curation through piloting, auditing, outcome measurement, and revision before scale-up.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A practical sequence is: curate the source material; constrain the task; pilot with diverse learners; audit factual and pedagogical quality; measure objective and learner-reported outcomes; monitor errors and overreliance; and revise before scale-up
- Educators need competencies to specify prompts and rubrics, recognize model failure, interpret learning analytics, protect data, and decide when human judgment is nondelegable
Constraints¶
- An intervention that reduces faculty workload in a well-resourced school may widen inequity if students need private subscriptions or high-bandwidth devices
- Future studies should prioritize active comparators, preregistration, model and prompt reporting, retention and transfer, adverse effects, and equitable implementation
Target Learners¶
- entry-to-practice medical students
- medical curriculum leaders and faculty
Target Learning Goals¶
- low-stakes rehearsal, structured case dialogue, feedback on bounded tasks, adaptive question practice with audited content, and guided critique of flawed outputs
