Assess robustness of non-experimental composition findings with impact thresholds for confounding variables¶

Description¶
The article demonstrates a sensitivity-analysis strategy for observational school-composition research, where unmeasured confounding is a persistent threat. The authors calculated the Impact Threshold for Confounding Variables (ITCV) for all significant coefficients, which "quantifies how strongly such confounds would have to be associated with both predictor and outcome to wash out the coefficient for the predictor." They then inspected whether any measured ECLS-K variables approached these thresholds, strengthening causal interpretation of the findings.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires significant focal coefficients from regression models
- Requires inspection of measured covariate-outcome and covariate-predictor correlations to compare against computed thresholds
Constraints¶
- The ITCV does not control for unobserved confounds; it only quantifies the association strength needed to nullify a coefficient
- The reading diversity coefficient (ITCV = .01) was too small to offer confidence of robustness
Target Learners¶
- Elementary school children in observational studies
Target Learning Goals¶
- Academic achievement
- Socioemotional adjustment
Related Strategies¶
- Include both academic and socioemotional outcomes when evaluating school composition effects
- Select confounders using a modified disjunctive cause criterion, controlling covariates measured prior to the treatment variable
