Structure synthesis work as a facilitator role plus dedicated synthesis weeks with individual artifacts feeding in-class group synthesis¶

Description¶
The KS intervention's pedagogical design combined a 20-minute lecture on knowledge synthesis, a student "discussion facilitator" role in regular weeks, and two synthesis weeks without new readings. Before class each student posted an individual synthesis artifact on Canvas; in class, groups collaboratively produced a group synthesis drawing on individual artifacts, then applied it by redesigning a ""problematic" learning situation".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- An asynchronous social annotation space generating peer ideas to synthesize
- Co-designed guidance outlining key components of an effective synthesis
Constraints¶
- The findings derive from analysis of one synthesis week with ten consenting students in one graduate course
Target Learners¶
- graduate students
- higher education learners in discussion-based courses
Target Learning Goals¶
- sustaining knowledge building across learning activities
- deeper in-class discussion grounded in peers' ideas
