Place LRE in the curriculum through special events, separate units or courses, or infusion¶

Description¶
The digest describes three approaches to including LRE in the curriculum (Naylor 1984): special events about the law such as Law Day, mock trial competitions, and courtroom field trips; a separate unit or course, typically in government and civics or as electives; and infusion of LRE into standard courses such as American history, world history, and government. Over the short term a semester course makes a positive difference in knowledge, skills, and attitudes, but some educators contend systematic infusion throughout the curriculum will yield the best results.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- For infusion, careful integration of an LRE strand across elementary and secondary grades
Constraints¶
- The preference for infusion over semester courses is an educator contention, not a tested result in the digest
Target Learners¶
- Elementary and secondary school students
Target Learning Goals¶
- Knowledge of law and legal processes
- Citizenship knowledge, skills, and attitudes
Related Strategies¶
- Use systematic staff development to build teacher capacity for LRE
- Address preservice teachers' EE teaching efficacy through infusion across methods courses or a separate EE course
