Description¶
In a routine professional-learning team meeting, a facilitator or peer invites a teacher to tell a small story about a specific teaching moment, often with a prompt that explicitly references emotion (e.g., "tell us about a time you felt frustrated with a student"). The narrating teacher's story includes an explicit or semi-explicit emotional label ("I felt annoyed," "I was worried"). Colleagues then respond — the strategy's effectiveness depends on whether that response is elaborated (asking what triggered the emotion, what it reveals about the teacher's beliefs, offering alternative interpretations) rather than narrow (a brief acknowledgment or expression of solidarity) or absent. Elaborated responses turn a teacher's emotional experience into a shared object of professional inquiry, surfacing beliefs and assumptions that might not come up if the conversation stayed at the level of what the teacher thought or did.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A recurring, trusted professional-learning group where teachers already share stories about practice
- A facilitator or norm that explicitly invites emotional content, not just descriptions of events or decisions
- Colleagues willing to ask probing follow-up questions rather than only offering supportive acknowledgment
Constraints¶
- Evidence is from a single national/cultural context and one PD program — Elaborated discussion of narrated emotions supports teacher professional learning [~W]
- Group norms can suppress explicit naming of negative emotions about students, especially in formal (vs. informal/side-comment) discussion, which limits how often this strategy surfaces the emotions most worth examining
Implementation Variability¶
- Facilitator prompting style strongly affects both how often emotions are narrated and whether responses become elaborated
Target Learners¶
- In-service teachers in ongoing professional learning communities
Target Learning Goals¶
- Surfacing and examining the beliefs and assumptions underlying a teacher's in-the-moment reactions to classroom events
- Building a shared, examined understanding of the emotional dimension of teaching, rather than treating it as private or irrelevant to instructional reasoning
Instructions¶
- Facilitator poses an invitation that explicitly references emotion (not just "what happened," but "how did that feel").
- Teacher narrates a small, specific story including a time, place, actors, and an explicit or semi-explicit emotional label.
- Group attends to the emotion directly: reflects the label back, asks clarifying questions, expresses empathy from the narrator's perspective.
- Group probes further: asks what triggered the emotion and what it reveals about the teacher's beliefs or expectations.
- Group collaboratively develops alternative interpretations of the situation and what it implies for future practice.
Related Strategies¶
- Reflective Practice — this strategy is a specialized form of reflective practice that adds explicit attention to the emotional (not just behavioral/cognitive) dimension of a teaching episode
- Facilitators can use a taxonomy of moves and strategies for acknowledging and exploring emotion to build a facilitation repertoire
Examples¶
- In one professional-learning team, a teacher's story about frustration with a "needy" student was initially met only with informal, whispered acknowledgment ("it drives me crazy") and formal praise ("well done"); when a colleague instead asked "what triggered you — is it partly that we expect to love all students but it doesn't happen?", the group moved into examining underlying beliefs about the teaching role.

Narrated Emotional Storytelling in Professional Learning Communities |
description |
