Use open-ended, modeling-focused collaborative tasks with embedded scaffolds to support group disciplinary engagement¶

Description¶
The study's curricula organized groupwork around cognitively and socially demanding inquiry tasks, and the authors report that "these curricula emphasized open tasks and objectives about modeling" with task instructions providing "at least a low level of embedded scaffolds for metacognitive and, slightly less often, collaborative engagement." Because open-ended tasks were associated with higher subsequent disciplinary engagement, designers of collaborative STEM units can prioritize open task structures, modeling and argumentation practices, and embedded scaffolds for engagement dimensions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Collaborative groups of three to four students working on shared inquiry tasks within curricula targeting disciplinary practices such as modeling and argumentation
Constraints¶
- The open-task association with disciplinary engagement was small (coefficient 0.08) and observed in middle school science and mathematics contexts; scaffolding indicators showed negligible relations and were dropped from the final model
Target Learners¶
- middle school students in science and mathematics
Target Learning Goals¶
- disciplinary engagement in modeling and argumentation
- collaborative knowledge co-construction
Affordances¶
Claims¶
- Open-ended tasks are associated with higher disciplinary engagement in the same observation interval [+W]
Related Strategies¶
- Redesign course projects around collaboration, open-ended problems, shared knowledge objects, technology mediation, and as-needed mentoring
- Low Floor, High Ceiling Tasks
