Description¶
Because makerspace learning challenges are complex and knowledge practices are multimodal, carrying them out can be challenging for students. The authors recommend that "further attention needs to be directed to the development of new pedagogical solutions, to better facilitat e multimodal knowledge practices and their collective management". The strategy directs educators toward designing facilitation that supports joint attention, talk types, material and embodied mediation, and management of shared epistemic objects during open-ended making. It is offered as a direction for enhancing makerspaces' educational potential rather than a tested prescription.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers or facilitators present in the space, available for students to call upon during challenges, as practiced in the FUSE Studio
Constraints¶
- The article derives this recommendation from one qualitative study in one makerspace; it explicitly labels the needed solutions as future development rather than specifying validated methods
Target Learners¶
- Elementary students working in heterogeneous small groups in school makerspaces
Target Learning Goals¶
- Collaborative knowledge creation, shared epistemic object and artifact development, and student engagement in multimodal making
Claims¶
- Cumulative, disputational, and exploratory talk types together mediated students' enactment of makerspace knowledge practices [+W]
- Episodes of off-task play with maker materials caused temporal fragmentation of groups' joint attention on the learning challenge [~W]
- Students in a school-based makerspace enact four intertwined multimodal knowledge practices combining embodied action, talk, space and artifact use [+W]
- An adjacent corridor served as an improvised spatial expansion of the makerspace mediating students' knowledge practices [~W]
