Purposive school sampling plus careful document coding, cleaning, and archiving for longitudinal assignment and student-work research¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The project selected an initial purposive sample of 11 networks and then two or three schools each, intending "to create a purposive sample of schools that would allow us to understand reasons for more or less successful development." Every assignment and piece of student work received a unique identification code; identifiers were cleaned off to protect confidentiality and prevent scorer bias; and documents were archived electronically and physically by subject, school, assignment type, and collection number for retrieval and scoring.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A streamlined data-management system with strong attention to detail, consistent ID coding across years, and fieldworkers individually trained in cleaning documents
Constraints¶
- The purposive sample cannot be used to generalize to all Chicago public schools, as the manual states
Target Learners¶
- Researchers studying classroom assignments and student work in public school settings
Target Learning Goals¶
- Understanding how school reform develops organizations and how that benefits student learning
