Description¶
A concrete pairing procedure for peer tutoring: "the teacher ranks students from highest to lowest reading achievement. To decrease the disparity of the reading ability of the pairs, the list is split in half. The first student listed on the first half of the list is paired with the first student on the second half of the list." This produces pairs in which each stronger reader is matched with a weaker reader who serves as coach during the stronger reader's reading turn.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A teacher ranking of students from highest to lowest reading achievement before pairs are formed
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- Elementary classroom students of mixed reading achievement
Target Learning Goals¶
- Reading proficiency through reciprocal peer tutoring
Claims¶
- PALS shows potentially positive effects on reading fluency for students with learning disabilities, with a substantively important but not statistically significant WWC-calculated effect size of 0.41 in Saenz et al. (2005) [+M] (evidence on PALS as a whole, not on the pairing step)
Related Strategies¶
- Paragraph Shrinking: a PALS activity the pairs then carry out
Examples¶
- Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS): the programme whose pairing procedure this is
