Realign: deploy Socratic withholding protocols that delay direct answers for conceptual or diagnostic queries¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The second framework component has institutions deploy wrapper applications governed by system prompts that implement a withholding protocol. Purely factual queries may still receive direct answers, but conceptual or diagnostic queries trigger Socratic Mode: 'offering hints in decreasing order of abstraction rather than immediate answers', typically by first requesting the learner's own explanation, then providing a hint, and only later revealing a fuller answer if needed.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Wrapper applications driven by specific system prompts that govern the tool's behavior and implement a withholding protocol that delays direct answer delivery for conceptual or diagnostic tasks.
Constraints¶
- Major AI providers may not restrict their general models, so institutions deploy wrappers rather than altering the underlying models.
Target Learners¶
- students in institutions deploying educational AI wrappers
- novice learners
Target Learning Goals¶
- guided discovery
- schema construction through hints rather than answer delivery
Related Strategies¶
- Refine: use inherent LLM limitations as organic adversarial examples for critique exercises
- Require: process-based assessment through metacognitive rationales for accepting or revising AI suggestions
- Restrict: preserve AI-free cognitive sanctuaries where unassisted capability is practiced and assessed
