Use representational nudges and creative challenge-reflection cycles to move learners between mathematical exploration, conceptual reasoning, and pedagogical decision-making¶

Description¶
Two cross-cutting mechanisms supported teachers' movement across MC, CK, and PCK: prompts for multiple representations and visualization, and cycles of creative challenge and metacognitive reflection. Representational nudges prompted teachers to move across tables, graphs, diagrams, and double number lines, connecting creativity to conceptual understanding. The cycle pattern — solve a task, extend it, explain how to teach it — repeatedly linked mathematical exploration to pedagogical reflection.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- AI prompts that request alternative representations after procedural answers and ask teachers to extend or pose problems
Constraints¶
- Some teachers found multi-representation prompts tedious
Target Learners¶
- in-service elementary and middle-grades mathematics teachers
Target Learning Goals¶
- representational flexibility
- problem posing and extension
- instructional design reasoning
