Research agenda: study long-run effects, non-English-speaking countries, and maths-targeted interventions, and improve control-group reporting and sample sizes¶

Description¶
The review's authors recommend several improvements to the evidence base: more research on long-run effects, since only seven studies tested effects beyond three months; more research from non-English-speaking countries, since a large share of studies is from the United States, Canada, or the UK; and more maths-targeted interventions, which they call "a promising research agenda". They also recommend increasing the number of units and students in intervention and control groups, since many studies were excluded for high risk of bias, and describing control-group instruction in detail, since variation in control conditions is a likely source of effect size variation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Estimates of long-run cost-effectiveness would be needed to prioritise between earlier and later interventions
Constraints¶
- The review searched for studies only up to July 2018
Target Learners¶
- Students in Grades 7–12 with or at risk of academic difficulties
Target Learning Goals¶
- Reading and mathematics achievement on standardised tests
