Description¶
Based on the qualitative analysis of group processes in productive failure, the Pathak et al. study's authors relate their findings to the notion of scripting in CSCL, "suggesting that scripting can be used to take advantage of the hidden learning that occurs with productive failure." This strategy treats the implicit gains from struggling with ill-structured problems as something collaboration scripts can deliberately surface and support, connecting the productive-failure phenomenon to established CSCL scripting work.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Qualitative understanding of what student groups actually say and what shared understanding they co-construct during productive failure
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- Student groups solving physics problems
Target Learning Goals¶
- Deeper conceptual understanding through productive failure experiences
