Description¶
The review team concurred with Frerejean et al. (2023) that a limited number of simulated educational experiences is not sufficient for students to develop complex skills, which requires comprehensive programmes combining simulation sessions with practical and workplace learning. They state there is no current substitute for students learning in practice with D/deaf patients, so appropriate preparation beforehand, with basic Deaf awareness as a minimum, is essential alongside opportunities for more experiential learning.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Appropriate preparation before practice, with basic Deaf awareness as a minimum, combined with experiential learning opportunities
Constraints¶
- The review notes many clinicians and educators focus solely on an audio experience, which denies students learning about wider D/deaf experiences such as barriers to accessing services
Target Learners¶
- health professional students in placement-based programmes
Target Learning Goals¶
- complex communication skills with D/deaf patients
- transfer of learning to clinical practice
Claims¶
Related Strategies¶
- Integrate GTA teaching as part of a broader multi-modality strategy, with hybrid GTA–manikin models, co-produced standards, and longitudinal, patient-inclusive evaluation
- Simulation Based Training
