Description¶
In Chapter 5, teams prioritize three to five high-level goals from the Chapter 4 tailoring activity and build an action plan in which "goals should be" SMARTIE: Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Realistic, Time-bound, Inclusive, and Equitable. For each goal, teams identify up to three high-level activities, a lead, a due date, and a status, with supporting notes. The guide's hypothetical district narrows its Chapter 4 options to three goals, such as conducting intentional outreach to Black and Latinx students to increase engagement in the college counseling program.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Goals must be prioritized from the Chapter 4 chart responses, with teams focusing on just a few activities given limited capacity
Constraints¶
- The guide recommends focusing on only a few activities, noting the hypothetical district had limited capacity and narrowed its options to three high-level goals
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students, particularly Black and Latinx students in the guide's example
- district staff
Target Learning Goals¶
- progress toward the district's whole-person focus area, such as engagement, belonging, and college and career readiness
Related Strategies¶
- Writing Down Goals
- Assess team readiness across leadership, facilitation, communication, shared understanding, and capacity before starting
- Form a small cross-departmental team with defined facilitation roles before starting alignment work
