Description¶
A concrete procedure the article implemented for strategy guidance in a tablet-based multiple document task. Before starting, students were instructed to "access documents and highlight important information in each document during reading, select and extract task-relevant information in each document and move it to the workspace, and organize and integrate extracted information in the workspace by comparing and contrasting information across documents". A cue card reminding them of the steps was available throughout the task, after a training task on another topic using a checklist of all application functions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The application must provide functions for simultaneous document access, highlighting, extraction to a workspace, and spatial organization
- Guidance targeting all three SOI processes must be given before the task, with a reminder cue available during the task
Constraints¶
- The procedure was implemented and tested with undergraduates on one socio-scientific issue; it targeted step three processes of the MD-TRACE model
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate students working with multiple documents
Target Learning Goals¶
- selecting, organizing, and integrating information across multiple documents
Affordances¶
Claims¶
- Guided LiquidText users redistribute task time toward document processing and away from writing [+W]
- Students guided to use LiquidText show lower acceptance of tablets for multiple document work than controls despite better performance [-W]
- Guided use of a multiple document reading application yields higher multiple document comprehension than access-only, unguided, or traditional pdf viewer use [+W]
- Unaided access to multiple document reading functions alone does not improve comprehension over a traditional pdf viewer [+W]
