Embed synchronized audio narration with finger-tracking animation in dual-language e-books to support independent bilingual reading¶

Description¶
The authors recommend designing dual-language e-books with "synchronized dual-channel (visual and audio) inputs and attention-guiding cues" so children reading independently attend to print in both their dominant and nondominant languages. This lets digital dual-language books deliver the print-referencing benefits of adult shared reading without an adult narrator, complementing traditional reading with explicit attention to print in bilingual education programs.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Audio narration and tracking animation must be presented contemporaneously and matched to the target text
Constraints¶
- The cueing effect fades once animation ends, so guidance is transient; comprehension gains may not follow in low-load single-language contexts
Target Learners¶
- Bilingual preschoolers and early primary children in bilingual education programs
Target Learning Goals¶
- Attention to print in the less dominant language and emergent biliteracy
