Apply the 10-minutes-per-grade homework time guideline, adjusted modestly for remote learning¶

Description¶
The paper recommends a common guideline that total homework across subjects be 10 minutes per night per grade level, e.g. a maximum of 30 minutes for a third grader but 120 minutes feasible for a high school student. Because remote learning shifts more work asynchronous, "the 10 minute per night may need to be adjusted slightly" to include former school self-study time, while focusing only on assignments with the strongest learning purpose.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers must prioritize assignments with the strongest learning purpose given limited synchronized instruction time
Constraints¶
- For lower grades, time formerly blocked as desk work time cannot be directly transitioned to homework, and the guideline still generally applies
Target Learners¶
- Elementary through high school students in remote or hybrid learning
Target Learning Goals¶
- Managing total independent-work load across subjects
