Description¶
Because the study found ACEs are distributed widely across race/ethnicity and income rather than concentrated only in disadvantaged families, the authors recommend combining universal prevention with targeted intervention. They state that "ACEs conversations should be routinely incorporated into well-child visits to provide foundational knowledge of toxic stress and health and to share resilience-promoting resources with children and parents as early as possible", and that racial/ethnic differences "underscore the importance of prevention and intervention programs that are culturally sensitive". A two-generational, social-determinant-of-health and trauma framework is recommended for strengthening resilience.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires sectors serving children and families to make ACEs resources available in every setting that touches children's and families' lives
Constraints¶
- The supporting evidence is cross-sectional and correlational, so the article's own limitations preclude causal claims about intervention effects
Target Learners¶
- children ages 6-17 exposed to adversity
- parents and guardians
- healthcare and service providers
Target Learning Goals¶
- recognizing and managing stress
- building resilience
- reducing health and achievement inequities
