Description¶
After implementing a high-impact undergraduate research experience, the mentor uses the taxonomy to self-evaluate the experience and make adjustments, closing the assessment loop. The article recommends that "After implementing the HIP, the taxonomy can then be used to self -evaluate the experience and make adjustments, eventually closing the loop on the assessment process." In the vignettes, an instructor identified each element's current milestone, reflected on satisfaction with each score and on constraints, and considered how to level up milestones and student engagement.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The experience must first be implemented; the mentor identifies the current milestone for each element of each taxonomy level and provides a rationale for each milestone score
Constraints¶
- Levelling up is bounded by constraints implicit in the experience, such as student skill level and time constraints
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate students in courses whose instructors revise research-embedded course design
Target Learning Goals¶
- increased student engagement in course-embedded research experiences
