Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Among 153 juniors and seniors (mostly women) at Millersville State Normal School, the correlation between general intelligence standing on the Army Alpha and school standing (average final marks for one term) was r = +.31. → E. B. Skaggs 1918

q2 · i? · associational · r1
An observational correlational study of 153 normal-school students (mostly women): Army Alpha scores were correlated with school standing computed as the average of final marks for one term. The article reports "r=+.31—.039 (Pearson's Product-Moment Formula)" with mean G. I. score of 117.1 points and mean S. S. grade of 81.00.
"The writer gave the Alpha test to juniors and seniors in the Millersville (Pa.) State Normal School and, after dropping those cases having no previous Normal School record, had left 153 individuals (mostly women)."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- General Cognitive Ability — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- The low Alpha–school-standing correlation is difficult to explain and investigators report conflicting correlation results — related
- Army intelligence test rankings corresponded with officers' rankings of soldiers (average correlation 0.536 across twelve companies), suggesting the tests measured something beyond literacy — related
- Directional correlations between test scores and discrepancy direction are low but suggest tension tests track scholarship superiority and assimilation tests track intelligence superiority — related
- Correlations between Alpha and grades vary by class standing, lowest for graduates (r = .15) and highest for seniors (r = .38) — related
