q2 i? Narrative connectedness measures obtained months earlier predicted later performance in phonological awareness, word reading accuracy, and text comprehension, but did not predict reading fluency. → Bárbara Malcorra 2024
Evidence¶
Bárbara Malcorra 2024¶
Bárbara Malcorra, Marina Ribeiro, Luísa Jensen, Giovana Gomes, Tamara Meletti & Natália Bezerra Mota. (2024). Speech connectedness predicts reading performance three months in advance: a longitudinal experiment. npj Science of Learning. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41539-024-00248-4
q2 · i? · associational · r1
Longitudinal correlational analysis (Spearman correlations) relating March/June narrative graph measures to October reading outcomes in 253 first and second graders; the article reports the predictive relationship for three abilities while explicitly excluding reading fluency. The correlation matrix in Fig. 1d prints the rho values, which are small (none above 0.23); being correlational, the study cannot show that connectedness causes later reading performance.
"Moreover, the oral narratives connected-ness was predictive 3– 4 months in advance of reading abilities related to phonological awareness, reading accuracy, and text comprehension, but not reading fluency."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Oral Language — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Reading and Language — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- Oral narrative connectedness in June positively correlates with phonological awareness, reading comprehension, and word accuracy measured in October. — possibly the same claim (merge candidate)
- Girls showed higher oral narrative connectedness than boys, with a different pattern of association with reading performance. — related
- Single-point connectedness measures from three stories are stable across the study period. — related
