Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Only eight of the 45 studies measured engagement, mostly with ad hoc or indirect measures, so engagement could not be included in the meta-analysis. → Ratinho 2026

Review-level finding on measurement practice: engagement was assessed in only eight studies, several without reliability estimates, using tools such as the SCEQ, EGameFlow, or ad hoc scales. Outcomes were instead categorized behaviorally (n = 6) and emotionally (n = 4) following Fredricks et al.'s multidimensional framework.
"Because engagement measures could not be synthesized meta-analytically, given the absence of validated instruments and the lack of studies with experimental-con trol comparisons, the reported outcomes were organized into behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement"
