q1 i? Longer eye fixation time might reflect either processing difficulty or extra processing effort needed to successfully comprehend the information, and whether it is good or bad can only be defined with measures of processing quality or outcome. → Kaakinen 2021

The author's theoretical argument, grounded in the eye-mind hypothesis (Just and Carpenter 1980), that fixation duration is just another reaction time measure whose interpretation is ambiguous. The Special Issue studies addressed this by validating eye movement data with self-reported engagement, learning outcomes, recognition of student profiles, instruction quality, and retrospective think-alouds. No effect size is printed.
"However, longer eye fixation time might reflect either processing difficulty or extra processing effort needed to successfully comprehend the information. Whether longer eye fixation time is a “good” or a “bad” thing can only be defined by using measures that reflect the quality of the processing or its outcome"

- Greater time and effort invested in the task correlate with better integration and smaller calibration error — related
