Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i1 In the short term both general feedback (d = .29) and the retrieval-benefit subgroup receiving individual feedback (d = .34) increased retrieval practice choice. → Luotong Hui 2021
q3 i2 In the long term only the retrieval-benefit group increased retrieval practice choice (d = .44); the general-feedback group did not (p = .08). → Luotong Hui 2021 (2)

Experiment 2 paired-samples t-tests against the day-1 baseline: both the general-feedback group and the retrieval-benefit subgroup of the individual-feedback group "chose retrieval practice more often on day 8", with d = .29 and d = .34 respectively.
"In the short term, both the general-feedback group (t(59) =2 . 4 3 ,p =. 0 2 ,d = .29) and the retrieval-benefit group ( t(30) = 2.26, p =. 0 3 ,d =. 3 4 )c h o s e retrieval practice more often on day 8 compared to day 1 at baseline."

Experiment 2 day-15 comparisons against baseline: only the retrieval-benefit group still chose retrieval practice more often (d = .44), while the general-feedback group's increase was no longer significant (p = .08). No direct day-15 difference between the groups (t(88) = .68, p = .50).
"In the long term, however, only the retrieval-benefit group chose retrieval practice more often on day 15 compared to the baseline ( t(30) = 2.49, p =. 0 2 , d = .44), which was not the case for the general-feedback group (t(58) = 1.80, p = .08)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Individual performance feedback increased retrieval practice choice only among students who had actually benefited from retrieval practice (Experiment 1) — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
- Individual performance feedback leads to more long-term choices for retrieval practice than general instruction on its benefits — possibly the same claim (merge candidate)
- Individual feedback impacted perceived utility only to a limited extent, and general feedback lowered perceived utility of retrieval practice (Experiment 2) — related
