Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Across the eight OSL studies the review tabulates, effects of the authentic location on knowledge acquisition and achievement range from positive to null to negative, and motivational findings are likewise inconsistent. → Valentina Nachtigall 2021

q2 · i? · causal · r?
Narrative review of eight OSL studies tabulated in Table 1: the review reports "highly inconsistent" cognitive effects, with Scharfenberg et al. (2007) positive, Itzek-Greulich et al. (2015) null, and Itzek-Greulich et al. (2017) negative on achievement; motivational results are also mixed.
"The results with respect to the cognitive effects (i.e., students' knowledge acquisition and achievement) are highly inconsistent. While Scharfenberg et al. (2007) found a positive effect of the OSL setting on students' knowledge acquisition, the findings from Itzek-Greulich et al. (2015) demonstrated no differences between the settings."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Students' perceived authenticity of the learning activity correlated with their situational interest but not with their knowledge acquisition — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
- Students' individual interest in social sciences correlated with their situational interest during the OSL visit (catch r = .27; hold r = .26) — related
- The review describes effects of authentically designed settings on motivational outcomes and learners' perceived authenticity alongside cognitive outcomes — related
