Meta-analysis of 5 randomized controlled trials reporting clinical operation scores on a continuous scale (239 PBL vs 256 traditional participants); no studies were excluded because of the small number. Pooled effect size was SMD = 1.15 (95% CI: 0.93, 1.37) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 98%).

"The meta-analysis results showed that the PBL teaching model increased clinical operation scores significantly compared with traditional teaching (SMD: 1.15, 95% CI: 0.93, 1.37, Fig. 7). Significant heterogeneity was found in the pooled effect (I2 = 98%, P < .01)"
