Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? Students receiving interest-personalized problems performed significantly better than controls on hard KCs involving writing symbolic expressions in Unit 6 (odds = 1.53, p < .001). → Walkington 2013

Randomized experiment with 145 ninth-grade Algebra I students in Cognitive Tutor Algebra. Hierarchical logistic regression of problem-part accuracy showed personalization improved hard KC accuracy with "odds = 1.53, p < .001". Hard KCs were writing symbolic expressions with slope and intercept.
"Table 4 shows that students in the personalization condition performed significantly better than the control group on hard KCs within Unit 6 (odds = 1.53, p < .001)."

Related Claims¶
- A 1993 case-study paper on culturally aware teachers asserts, without data of its own, that instruction incorporating students' life experiences, language and skills improves academic performance — the general claim this finding bears on, with the studies behind it
- Personalizing algebra story problems to student interests improved accuracy on easy knowledge components within the tutoring unit — related
- Personalization reduced time spent on hard expression-writing steps, and students who had received it were still faster at writing expressions in a later non-personalized unit — related
- In a small subgroup of struggling students (n = 25), interest personalization greatly improved expression-writing accuracy within the tutoring unit — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
- Students receiving personalized problems gamed the tutoring system less during the personalized unit, with no difference in a later unit — related
- Learners invest more effort in tasks they perceive as interesting, personally important, or useful to their future goals. — a broader claim this one bears on
- Self-reported germane cognitive load correlates positively with interest (QCM) among college students solving algebra problems — related
- An IES practice-guide presentation recommends personalized problem contexts, asserting without cited studies that students engage more actively and perform better in them — related
- Ninth grade algebra students solve verbally presented problems better than symbolically presented problems — related
- Eyetracking showed students often answer word problems without looking at the algebraic expression, leading the curriculum to treat expression-writing as an induction task with the formula row moved to the bottom of the table — related
- Students are significantly worse at translating two-step algebra story problems than matched one-step problems, implicating a hidden integrative knowledge component — related
- The personalization effect improves learning, moderated by prior knowledge, content type, pacing, culture, and language — a broader claim this one bears on
