Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i3 Latent correlations showed self-concept was most strongly correlated with low cost (r = .82) and intrinsic value (r = .80), and moderately with attainment value (r = .55) and utility value (r = .45). → Guo 2016

q2 · i3 · associational · r2
Latent correlations from the second-order CFA (Model FO-4V) in 1,868 ninth-graders. The four value components were themselves moderately to highly correlated, ranging from .41 (utility value and low cost) to .77 (intrinsic value and low cost).
"Math self-concept was moderately correlated with math attainment value (r = .55) and utility value (r = .45) and more highly correlated with intrinsic value (r = .80) and low cost (r = .82; see Table 3)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Self-concept and value beliefs emerge as equally important predictors of teacher-rated behavioral engagement — related
- Different value components differentially predict outcomes: low cost for achievement, attainment value for effort, and utility value uniquely predicting none — related
- School grades tend to be more highly correlated with academic self-concept than standardized test scores — related
- Self-concept and global value interact synergistically and positively in predicting achievement, effort, and teacher-rated engagement — related
- Only the self-concept-by-low-cost interaction adds predictive power for achievement beyond the self-concept-by-global-value interaction — related
- Dimensional comparison effects extend to subjective task values, with contrast effects strongest for intrinsic value and costs and lowest for utility value, often mediated by self-concept — related
- Students' expectancy, intrinsic value, and utility value decline significantly while perceived psychological and effort costs increase during the first half of gateway math courses — related
