Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? Reading Ability C correlated 0.85 with the Terman Group Test, higher than Visual Vocabulary (0.76) or any weighted reading test. → Wyman 1921

Grade VIII reading study: the second criterion combined all tests weighted by five independent expert judges' average values as measures of silent reading ability. The article asks whether "is our criterion for reading ability really a measure of general intelligence, or does the Terman Group test measure reading ability?" The correlations are reported as raw coefficients with probable errors, so no standardised magnitude is coded.
"Here the highest correlation is with the Terman Group test; and, as the correlation is a high one, we must conclude they measure very much the same thing."

Related Claims¶
- The low corrected correlation between the arithmetic exercise and the English criterion affords objective evidence that arithmetic and English ability are separate capacities — related
- Teachers' judgments of pupils' reading ability correlate more highly with a general mental ability test than with any of the so-called reading tests — related
- Of the so-called reading tests used, Thorndike's Visual Vocabulary is the best measure of reading ability — related
