Description¶
The 5Essentials Survey is completed every spring by students in grades 4-12 and all teachers in CPS pre-K-12 classrooms, plus key staff, and is "designed to capture important elements of school climate and organization." For this study the team identified 14 student-survey and 11 teacher-survey measures that prior research suggests might be protective after adverse experiences, and used OLS regression to relate these measures to school-specific changes in student outcomes with proximity to homicide.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Completed annually by students in grades 4-12 and teachers across the school to yield school-level climate measures
Constraints¶
- The study used it correlationally; the analysis cannot determine which measures were comparatively more important
Target Learners¶
- CPS students in grades 4-12
- K-12 teachers and school staff
Target Learning Goals¶
- School climate and organization supporting academic and behavioral outcomes amid community violence
Claims¶
- Schools that mitigated proximity-to-homicide effects had stronger, more positive school climates, including engaging instruction and trusting relationships [+W]
- Some high schools mitigated the typical negative effects of proximity to homicide: most student outcomes declined after a nearby homicide, but not all schools saw average declines [+W]
