Description¶
In addition to classroom investigations, Core-Plus Mathematics provides sets of MORE tasks, which are designed to engage students in "Modeling with, Organizing, Reflecting on, and Extending their mathematical understanding" during individual work outside of class. The tasks extend the lesson cycle beyond the classroom, complementing the collaborative in-class investigations with independent practice that reinforces and deepens lesson objectives.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Assigned as individual homework-style work outside of class, connected to lesson objectives
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- High school mathematics students using the Core-Plus curriculum
Target Learning Goals¶
- Modeling, organizing, reflecting on, and extending mathematical understanding
Claims¶
- The evidence base for Core-Plus Mathematics is small: of 17 reviewed studies, only one met WWC standards (with reservations) and 16 did not meet standards or screens [-W]
- Core-Plus Mathematics has potentially positive effects on mathematics achievement for high school students, with an average improvement index of +15 percentile points [+W]
- The effect on SAT math scores was positive but not statistically significant, though large enough to be substantively important (effect size at least 0.25) [+W]
- Core-Plus Mathematics showed positive, statistically significant effects on ninth-grade ITED math and CPMP Course 1 and 2 posttest subtests after WWC adjustments [+W]
