Description¶
Four pilot multimedia learning modules (MLMs) were developed covering Coulomb's Law, Electric Fields, Electric Flux, and Gauss' Law, each covering one lecture's worth of content in approximately 10 scenes. Each scene was "a Flash movie containing dynamic animations synchronized with an audio narration that was controlled by the student (pause, play, rewind, and position)". Embedded formative assessments in two or three scenes per module required correct answers before advancing. Average narration time was 12 minutes; students typically took about 17 minutes per module including assessment.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Embedded assessment questions must be answered correctly before the student can move to the next scene; a modest amount of course credit can be assigned to viewing and performance
Constraints¶
- Modules were designed according to principles from multimedia learning research and covered only the first two weeks of an introductory E&M course
Target Learners¶
- undergraduates in calculus-based introductory electricity and magnetism
Target Learning Goals¶
- Coulomb's Law, superposition, electric fields, electric flux, and Gauss' Law
Affordances¶
Claims¶
- The MLM group showed greater preference for the study materials over their current textbook than the two text-based groups [+W]
- The multimedia learning module advantage over the textbook persists on a retention test administered two weeks after the lessons [+W]
- MLM-script presentations fall between the other two groups: above the Textbook group but below the MLM group, as multimedia learning theory predicts [+W]
