Oriented semantic network: linear ordering of the semantic network treated as psychological rather than grammatical¶
Element · All elements
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The oriented semantic network is the second segment, produced when the semantic network "is put in some linear order." Labov treats this ordering as "a psychological matter more than a grammatical matter," allowing any of the possible orderings of a network; each legitimate ordering gives rise to some corresponding sentence, such as a passive for one ordering of the boy-hurt-father network.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A prior semantic network whose elements can be placed in linear order
Constraints¶
- The means by which the network is ordered is left unexplained in the note; Labov has not made all details clear to the author
Target Learners¶
- linguists and language researchers
Target Learning Goals¶
- understanding how ordering choices map content structures onto sentence forms
Affordances¶
Claims¶
Related Elements¶
- Grammaticalization component: supplies function words and labeled bracketings that make utterances sound smooth
- Semantic network: content words connected by lines as the starting point of the production model
- Phonologization: final segment applying phonology to the bracketed utterance
