MATHia strategy-choice problems where students select between independently taught strategies¶

Description¶
MATHia instructional content in which students choose between math strategies that were previously taught to them independently. Some problems favor one strategy over the other, which the authors use as an opportunity to study whether students learn to attend to problem characteristics suggesting one strategy. The paper analyzes student behavior in this content using large-scale log data and BERT-based modeling of strategy use.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Strategies must have been previously taught to students independently before the strategy-choice problems are encountered
Constraints¶
- The analysis is limited to instructional content within MATHia where some problems favor one strategy over the other
Target Learners¶
- K-12 math students using the MATHia tutoring system
Target Learning Goals¶
- Cognitive flexibility in selecting math strategies that are appropriate and efficient for a problem
