Description¶
The technology intervention consisted of Pasco data acquisition hardware and data analysis software supporting real-time data collection and representation in hands-on labs. In the momentum lab, students used Pasco PasCarts with motion detectors, and laptop computers instantly displayed position vs. time and velocity vs. time graphs. Student activity centered on interpreting and analyzing the data they had collected, supporting model construction and validation in the modeling curriculum.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- High-tech data acquisition hardware and software to support model development through real-time data collection and representation
Constraints¶
- Students could not retrieve the data outside of class, and there were initial difficulties setting up laptops, including lack of wireless and computers freezing
Target Learners¶
- algebra-based introductory physics students (biology, computer science, environmental studies, pre-medical majors)
Target Learning Goals¶
- conceptual understanding of Newtonian mechanics, including momentum and collisions
