Description¶
A faculty-designed rubric that "makes visible the components of sound instructional reasoning." The final version (FPJR) has four criteria — A: rich descriptions of students and how they responded to the lesson; B: rich descriptions of how students understood the concepts, ideas and/or skills; C: recognizing how choices impacted the learning experience; D: recognizing how pedagogical decisions shape student understanding — each rated sophisticated (3), semi-sophisticated (2), or less sophisticated (1). It was used in coursework and field-based reflections to help candidates "articulate their rationales, consider alternatives, and refine their instructional decisions," and served as "a shared language for analysis and interpretation of data."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Used within iterative cycles of supervision and paired with written post-teaching analysis prompts so candidates' reasoning can be rated against the criteria
Constraints¶
- The rubric alone did not provide systems for candidates to develop over time under supervision; the authors found it "lacking in several ways" until paired with revised prompts and feedback
Target Learners¶
- teacher candidates in secondary social studies clinical experiences
Target Learning Goals¶
- pedagogical judgment: interpreting classroom interactions and making responsive instructional decisions
Claims¶
Related Elements¶
Examples¶
- Iterative post-teaching analysis with rubric-aligned written feedback and revise-and-resubmit cycles
